We’ve busy cleaning, sanitizing, and planning our future classes. We want our clients and staff to be safe. We anticipate resuming classes again soon and can’t wait to fill our studio with you, your friends, and your family. In the meantime, we’re pleased to share about Katherine, one of our instructors, so that you can get to know her a bit before you come to our next Come Paint With Us class!

Meet Your Instructor, Katherine

Katherine teaching our popular "Peacock" classKatherine Dorland is a Nevada County-based Concept Artist and our primary paint class instructor at Come Paint With Us. We’re happy to let you know that Katherine will be teaching in-person “paint and sip” classes for Come Paint With Us once we can gather again!

Katherine enjoys working with people of all levels of artistic skills. She especially likes sharing her love for art by teaching others and motivating them to bring out their inner creativity. She sets painters at ease with her clear step-by-step instructions, bubbly personality, and the passion she brings to her painting classes. Katherine’s encouragement and positivity bring smiles to her students’ faces throughout the class. She’s happy to provide help as needed so that everyone leaves class with something they love as well as memories of a fun night out!

Teaching Art – Inspiring Creativity

Katherine providing one-on-one guidance to a Come Paint With Us painterWhen asked what she enjoys about teaching art, Katherine replied, “I love showing people that they can paint too. That even the hardest image, when broken down, can be easy to make and add your own little flair. No two pieces [of art] are ever the same at Come Paint With Us, and that is because no two people are the same.”

She adds, “Reviving or sparking a newfound interest in art for our class participants is such fun! Plus, the look on their faces when they see their results can’t be beaten.”

Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Computer Graphics with a Studio Arts minor, Katherine got her start in digital art, working as a Concept Artist, Illustrator, and Storyboard Artist.

As a Junior-Level Concept Artist, Katherine has created illustrations for many online games. Katherine’s background includes a stint as an elementary school art instructor, at Echo Ridge School in Nevada City. Her art has garnered awards at the local level, winning her first place in four categories at the Nevada County Fair: Fine Arts watercolor, Fine Arts Advanced, Mixed Medium, and Computer Art.

Art Provides Freedom from Perfectionism

“The thing I love most about art is the freedom it gives…there are no limitations to what you can draw and design. Nothing has to be perfect, and often it is the imperfections that make something truly amazing, and it’s own. People can look at the same painting, and every person will see something different, something that resonates more with themselves. Art, for me, is in itself a form of expression. It can be a bridge between people, ideas, and emotions,” Katherine shares.

Katherine teaching students how to depict the Bridgeport BridgeShe has envisioned and produced many new paintings for Come Paint With Us, including Lighthouse, Cosmic Eve, and Sunset Citrus. Katherine’s “day job” is at Lifetime Adoption Center in Grass Valley. There, she assists hopeful adoptive parents as they create their adoption profiles and websites. This media is then presented to women thinking about adoption to select the right adoptive family for their baby. Her job includes providing edits, advice, and ideas so that couples can produce a personalized website and profile that accurately represents them.

Katherine can’t wait to see you in class soon. Come paint with us, have a glass of wine, and create art together! You’ll be so glad that you did.
